Her life was perfect until she hit puberty. Though she supposed some girls may say that. Others may say that their lives became better after it. Sure she went through the usual changes like any other girl. Her body started to fill out, her voice changed, she began to feel things she hadn't felt before, and she started to grow hair in funny places. But it wasn't until time went on that she began to notice then finally know she wasn't like the other girls.
It all started innocently enough at first. Just a whisper in her mind here and there. Time progressed and it became worse. The whispers became voices. The voices became louder. It didn't take her long to pinpoint that the voices in her head weren't created by her but were the thoughts of those around her. Unfortunately she couldn't turn it off and she didn't know how to tune it out. That's when the horrible migraines started. That's when she began to look at everyone around her differently once she knew what they were thinking.
You would assume that the poor girl would get some relief as she slept, right' No, of course not. It wasn't long after she was able to read someone's thoughts that at night she could invade someone's dreams. It was like watching a movie when she slept. It was horrifying.
Of course only so much amount of makeup could cover the bags under her eyes from her insomnia and her grades could only slip so far before her parents noticed. Thinking she was sick they took her to the doctor. He prescribed her something to help her sleep and something for her migraines. She didn't mention her abilities to her parents or her doctor because she knew that would be bad.
The medicine helped for a short while. Things improved just slightly. Then they started the same cycle again. Her parents took her back to the doctor. They increased her dosage. They also ran some tests. Soon her life became a routine of school and tests. They increased her dosage again, and again, and again until she was at the maximum amount she could safely take. It was time for more tests.
Her parents pulled her out of school. They decided a tutor would be best. It helped for a while. Until she couldn't stand to be tortured by her tutor's thoughts of her she got him fired and another one was hired. This sweet little old lady who reminded her of someone's grandmother. She was a blessing to work with.
After a while the tests began to take a toll on her. She was physically and emotionally exhausted. She couldn't take it anymore. Her parents loved and adored her, right' They would understand wouldn't they' With that naive thought in mind she finally revealed the truth. Of course naturally they thought she was insane and therefore had her committed. It was for her own good they had said. She would understand when she was older they had told her.
It only got worse once she was in that place. The thoughts of the people gave her enough nightmare fuel that she didn't even have to accidentally invade another's dreams. And when she did? It scarred her in more than one way. The staff was nice enough. Her doctor was nice. That was until she told the doctor what they were thinking. The poor doctor was so terrified they quit the next day.
Then came Dr. Sokolov. Dr. Sokolov had heard of Robyn's condition. Like the doctor before him he thought that she was simply delusional and mentally ill. Boy was he in for a surprise when she began to recite his thoughts verbally word for word. However, instead of running away he gave her a chance. Whether it was out of his own curiosity or he genuinely wanted to help her he stayed. Using what knowledge he had available to him he began to help her. At the very least he was able to accomplish was to help her not invade someone's dreams. That way she could finally get some sleep. She could finally feel relieved if only when she was asleep.
After a few months of working with Robyn he made the call to a special government agency who handled special cases like these. She was too special of a girl to remain here. Or at least that's what he told her. He also said with them she could get the help she needed. This made her more happy than anything. She wanted to feel just a bit normal if she could.
It was on her sixteenth birthday that her parents relinquished all rights of her and entrusted her into the government's hands. There in that secluded facility she was able to finish her education. They taught her to take control of her abilities and not let them overwhelm and weigh her down. They trained her body to be ready for any situation. She learned how to kill with a weapon or her bare hands. She learned how to defend herself. She was taught how to get around a computer to obtain information.
On her nineteenth birthday she was finally done with training. Her first assignment' Rhy'Din. They told her that she was freelance now. To only work for the highest paid client. To use what she had learned to get the biggest paycheck. They would check in on her from time to time of course. But for the first time in her life Robyn felt normal and right at home.
