When we wore a heart of stone, we wandered to the sea
Hoping to find some comfort there, yearning to feel free
And we were mesmerized by the lull of the night
And the smells that filled the air
And we layed us down on sandy ground. It was cold, but we didn't care
Yes, we were drawn to the rhythm Drawn into the rhythm of the sea
"Drawn To The Rhythm" Sarah McLachlan
The salty breeze played in the silky golden red strands of hair as she stood upon the bow of the ship hands resting on her leather clad hips and watched the slow process of loading the cargo. Sapphire eyes just gleamed with heady excitement as they swept lazily over the figures on the docks below. She always loved these moments, just before shoving- off, and here it was in all its crisp morning clarity. Lightly brushing the wayward strands from her face, she spun about to look at her brother.
The tall lanky form was lounging back against a large crate while a map fluttered lightly in his hands. Rust hued wind swept hair danced against his brow enhancing that already rakish look he always carried and that only made her smile widen. Already many of the young women she had hired had paused in their work to admire him at a distance. Even if the men outnumbered them, she had taken those from trusted families as her crew, not caring about gender, yet her brother drew their eyes where others did not.
"Ye look like one of those Pirates from those dreadful bodice ripper romances our Mama used to read, Kar." Teasing laughter accompanied her words as she moved rest next to him, gloved hands resting lightly on the edge of rough wood.
He did, with those snug, butter soft breeches she that also adorned her own body and the flowing black silk shirt with the vest to complete the picture. Of course with that goatee of his and the wicked glint in those aqua-green eyes seeming to enhance the dangerous aura he seemed to carry with him.
The aqua gaze lifted from the inspection of the charts he had been plotting with a smirk on his lips. "Glass houses Kit." A finger lifting and waggled with a returning glint of playfulness touching the strong features. "Not that I ever read those silly books, but one might think you would fit the bill for one of those sassy hard headed heroine types."
A light grimace danced over her delicate features as she gave a most emphatic shake of that golden red mane. "Aye, I get the idea. I shall nae mention it again if ye nae say such things. I would sooner kiss a shark then get dragged from the Enyala Kuru by some vile raggedy high sea rogue."
"Weather permitting, this rout here," A finger moved along the markings he had made on the graph he had been studying so intently. "Should get us to Feanturi in about 4 days or less."
Leaning a bit to get a clear look, she taps her own digit against one small jaggedly sketched area. "Aye, ye be right, but I nae care to get to close to the Griyfid Reefs, those things have taken out many a ship in a storm."
"So, if the weather looks forbidding, we add another day and give that a wide berth." Carelessly tossing the hair out of his face with a lean hand, he settled his gaze on his sister. "The reason I thought this rout best was the recent rumors of those Yeadia Marauders. They are far more active of late, and since most of our fleet does avoid that area, they won't look there."
A slow pondering nod after a moment was her response. "Ye be right of course. I say that we lay in this course and if Mother Nature looks like she plans a tantrum, we take steps at the time to avert potential danger of those reefs and the marauders."
A capricious smile curled on his lips as he nodded, then snapped off a quick salute. "Aye, aye, Captain Kitty!"
A quick swat of a gloved hand at her brother's teasing manners before she caught sight of her oldest crewman boarding. Kagan Shavier was a seasoned sailor and she was glad to have him, even knowing he was likely only here at Morg's insistence. The tall muscled man headed right towards the siblings and after the exchanging of handshakes with Kar, he nodded to Kitian with a boisterous smile. "Morn to ye Captain. Reporting in for duty."
"Tis' good to see ye Mr. Shavier welcome aboard. I hope ye shore leave was welcomed." She had rose from her lean as she greeted the tall fellow and a warm smile flowed upon her full lips and from inside her vest she withdrew the crew manifest. "Ye be needing this I would think." Kagan managed the duties of every member of the Enyala Kuru and of course required the names.
"Thank ye much Lass." Sharp eyes scanned over the list and he nodded slowly, and then frowned mildly at one name upon the registry of crewmen. "Ye hired Erirk Harag I see. That one might make trouble. Last ship he served on found themselves under attack by the Orcish Clans on Yalnia after he had managed to anger them at one of the Dock Taverns. They very nearly sunk that vessel ye know. We best keep an eye on that one." A stern eye rose piercing upon Kit.
"Aye. He told me about that and promised to nae be so foolish again." Her golden red hair shifting as she nodded with a tilt as she grinned impishly at Kagan.
"He told ye eh' Well then, nae anything wrong with giving that one another chance. He has it in the blood as his father served on the "Ekkeia" with ye own sire when they were lads and eventually took captain there too." The paper was folded and ticked away with a broad smile. "Let me take this down to the dock office then get those layabouts moving when I return. The day be wasting when we would be best served out on the waves."
She could do nothing more but nod in agreement as eyes shifted to her brother. Morg had made sure one of the best sailors of the family fleet was serving with her and it was rather staggering. Kagan Shavier could have gone into the administrative side of the business years ago but had simply been unable to leave the sea. He lived only on the salty breath of the waters they traveled.
Kar just grinned back at his sister, any of his thoughts hidden by that devilish expression that she could only roll her eyes upwards for a moment of time. "Kagan should be captain for his own ship so why does he stay with us?"
As predicted he didn't answer, just gave her one of those noncommittal shrugs of his before pushing upright. "Time to push off. Kit. Kag is right, the sun's moving fast and the day is withering every moment."
"Aye, that it is. Ye want to play second and go and bellow at the crew to get moving or shall I?" Sapphire eyes glittering with mirth as they shifted over in a side glance at her younger brother.
"Oh let me, we don't want them considering Mutiny even before we set wind to the sails do we?" Smirking as he started to stroll off in that predatory manner of his.
Another shaking of her head as she headed towards the bridge of the ship, dragging a scarf out to tie back the wayward mane as it persisted in letting the breezes send it fluttering about. Perhaps it was the strong connection her family had to the sea that now gave her comfort, but she felt confident, this was something she did well and with finesse.
