"Give it back to me."

"Why should I?" Came the hissing query.

"Because it doesn't belong to you." Kitty stated impatiently.

"It doesn't belong to you either." The deep hissing voice came from the shadows.

"He was my brother. I have more claim to it than you do."

"Marlenthal made his choices. Now his soul belongs to me." The voice slithered in the darkness.

"I will take it from you."

"Feel free to try. If you can make it past my sentry." The voice laughed. A hand with long talons flickered from the shadows. A doorway opened and Kitty found herself being thrust through it into a pit of flames.

Black scales rippled over her body. Her mind flared out to form a protective bubble around her as she landed on the hot rock bottom. The rubber on the bottom of her shoes sizzled as it started to melt. The whole place reeked of sulfur and brimstone. However, none of this had her attention. She was focused on something much more important.

She was face to kneecap with a nightmare. A beast of flames and death. Two great horns curved out and forward to frame the balrog's face as it snarled at Kitty.

"Ah crap."

Her eyes dropped and she could see a door behind the monstrous demon. Clearly she needed to get to that door. Easy, right' She's Kitty Helston! She can do this!

About then a taloned hand the size of a wingback chair swung down and sent her flying.

Maybe not.

"Oooph!" Kitty grunted as she impacted a stone wall. She slid down the rocky surface like a runny egg until she met the ground. She never got the chance to get to her feet. A flame tipped tail whipped around and sent her flying once more into yet another wall.

This time she latched onto a pillar type structure and swung herself around it, placing it between herself and the balrog. She quickly slid down the ground and took off at a full run for a point further away from the monster just as the powerful beast sent the pillar crashing into the stone wall with a swing of it's fist.

"Yanno, I'm really starting to think his soul isn't worth this much." She muttered to herself as she went diving behind a pile of boulders. Said pile was soon being smashed to smithereens just as she took a few breaths.

"What did he ever do for me?" An honest self inquiry as she bolted to another spot. "All he did was cause me trouble and do whatever Kalentor told him to do."

The memory of her other brother left a bad taste in her mouth and she grunted as she tried to make a dive through the balrog's legs toward the elusive door.

This did not work out as planned.

She slid toward the door easily enough. But as she reached for the handle, that blasted fire tipped tail sent her flying again. This time she saw where she was heading, and it wasn't pretty. Her projected landing spot was filled with deadly stalagmites. Her scales would not protect her from solid stone spikes coming up from the ground.

"Oh sh*t!" Was all she could utter as she pulled one of her earrings free and broke the glass bead.

Suddenly, in Rhydin, a portal opened in the middle of the commons of the Red Dragon Inn. Kitty came through it and skidded along the floor before coming to a stop in a heap. The chair sized hand came through the portal after her, but the portal snapped shut, severing the hand from it's arm at the wrist.

Khoom sipped his infamous pink drink "And how's your day been, if you don't mind me being so late in the asking?" He plucked up a mini-muffin or two for a bite.

"Well, I was in a tussle with a balrog, and somehow while I was sailing through the air after he threw me like a football, I ended up here."

He gave an epic browquirk. "A balrog" Whyever for?"

"He has something that belongs to me." Kitty said vaguely into her coffee mug. She really didn't want to explain what she was after and why she was after it.

"Still has it, I take it' A pity, that ....hmmm ...." He took another sip and puffed on his pipe that released a pink mist. "As I imagine it's nothing you wish to discuss, might there be anything I can do to assist?"

Her eyes were watching Cianan's departure as she answered her fellow Helston. "Khoom, your dislike of violence sorta prevents that."

At that, he had to grin. "It isn't a dislike of violence, my dear. My choice of pacifism has always stemmed from being unable to deflect the pains of others. But, I do have certain other resources at my disposal now, if you recall."

"True. This was something I was hoping to avoid involving her in." She admitted. Chryrie was the last person she wanted involved in her attempt to retrieve Marlenthal's soul.

"Well, if that's your wish, I might see about a different line of inquiry ....After all, if you're thinking of something involving a great deal of conflict, I can't think of a better asset on your side then a squad of my ....larger cousins."

"Mmm. That's an idea." Kitty scrunched up her nose in thought. Having assistance in this would be nice. But the few hybrids she knew, she was too fond of to want to involve them in what could possibly be a death sentence. "Maybe. Although I'd feel terrible if they got hurt too badly."

"Perhaps someone a little more distantly removed from the family line" Say, the next planet over" I've heard tales of a few restless types in their midst ...."

"Maybe. As long as they're not anyone you're too terribly fond of." Kitty murmured to Khoom as her gaze moved to look at what appeared to be a new Nexus victim. While everyone was busy with the new Rhydin citizen, she became lost in her thoughts.

Was Marlenthal really worth all this hassle?

"Aunt Kit, you really need to come to the warehouses. Like, right now." Traeline's voice trembled through the phone.

"Why' Are you ok" Who do I need to kill?" Kitty immediately felt her heart leap into her throat. Trae very rarely showed fear of anything.

"I'm fine. But....uh....you really need to get here."

Despite the horrendous weather, Kitty hopped on her bike and took off toward the Helston warehouses near the docks. Her mind was going a million miles an hour with worry. Thanks to Chryrie's interference, she couldn't even remotely reach her niece telepathically to get an idea of what was going on.

She nearly dumped the bike when she came to a screeching stop at the warehouses. She didn't care. She all but threw the bike aside as she stormed for the gate.

The guard on duty didn't say a word. He knew that look and to be properly afraid. He just pointed in the direction of which warehouse Kitty would want to head towards.

"They're in E4."

"Right." Kitty growled in passing. E4" That one was mostly empty this time of year. Why would Trae be there"

Once she got past the guardhouse and gates, she took off at a full run toward that particular warehouse building. She nearly ran over about eight people on her way there.

The door to the warehouse was thrown open and she bolted in to find herself staring at the back of Trae's head. She didn't look harmed. But then she looked beyond her to realize that Trae was standing nose to bellybutton with a very large creature that was heavily armed. It looked like an eleven foot tall, bipedal grizzly bear but with more muscle and less flab. Behind him were about nineteen more creatures just like him.

Trae turned at the door opening and immediately sighed in relief. "Oh thank whatever you're here. These guys showed up and they insist on talking to you."

"This is the one known as Kitty Helston?" The lead bear creature growled while looking down at Kitty.

Kitty eyed the beast as she moved around Trae and toward one of the large crates that was within the warehouse. It would make her just tall enough to look eye to eye with him and his friends. Claws sunk into wood just long enough for her to swing herself up. Once up there, she dusted off her hands and took a deep breath. "Yes. I'm Kitty Helston. Now. Who the hell are you? Why the hell are you in my warehouse?"

"We are your backup." The apparent leader of the group of beasts rumbled. Just as he said that the distinct whine of five particle cannon and five railguns powering up could be heard. It was accompanied by the sound of about ten assault rifles clacking to the ready.

Kitty lifted her eyebrows at the group in general. Backup"

"I don't recall hiring a group of armor plated bears. And I'm pretty certain I would remember doing something like that." She crossed her arms as she aimed her focus on the leader. There was something about these bears creatures that faintly tickled at her memory.

"We were hired by the half-breed Vyska. And it is appreciated if you would not call us bears." The leader growled.

Vyska" That was it. Their scent. It was slightly similar. That meant these beasts before her were...

"Ular. You are the Ular mercenaries one of my clan had suggested hiring." The understanding suddenly coming to Kitty's mind. She nodded more to herself than to them. Then she once more focused on the leader.

"Have your men power down their weapons while they are within my walls. Otherwise I might be inclined to shove it up their arse."

The leader began to speak, but was cut off by a voice behind him.

"I would very much like to see this spectacle of which you mention, small one."

Kitty's eyes locked on the source of the voice before he finished his sentence. A younger one, judging from the lack of metal in his beads. He was also one of the smaller ones, but small could be considered relative when they were all over eleven foot tall. Kitty then cut her eyes back to the leader. He didn't say anything, but seemed more inclined to see what she would do.

Dominance must be established? Very well.

Kitty took a flying leap from the crate she was standing on. She landed on the shoulder of one very confused Ular female. She was only a pit-stop as Kitty then leaped at her target. He ducked to avoid her, as she expected. As soon as she landed behind him, he was turning to face her. She used her shorter stature to her advantage by moving in closer so his assault rifle would be over her head. She reached up to latch her clawed fingers onto the rifle, then with strength he clearly did not expect from one her size, she ripped the rifle from his grasp.

She took a step to the side and back as she spun around. As she moved, one hand slapped the weapon's safety on. The other swung it around to slap the gun into the back bend of his nearest knee. The Ular swiped at her as he was forced down to one knee from the gun's impact. She had already released the gun as she moved behind him. He was starting to get back to his feet when claws gripped his armor. Suddenly the young Ular found himself having a lesson in flight without wings. However his flight was short lived. It came to an abrupt halt when he impacted another grouping of crates.

The remaining Ular watched their comrade until he landed. Then, in almost near unison, they looked at Kitty.

"I said lower your weapons." She snarled out through gritted teeth.

The silence after nineteen weapons were either powered down or disengaged was deafening.

Details. So many details. But they were tiny tedious details that had to be dealt with. How much they were paid. How much they were going to be paid on completion. How much ammo they could carry and Kitty would need to provide. How many healing potions would need to be procured, and how many each Ular would carry. What they were facing and how they would face it was also discussed, of course. Kitty left no detail untouched. But then it came time.

It was awkward to have twenty Ular holding hands as she held the hand of the leader, Commander Murshk. His second in command, Commander Thr'll, seemed less than pleased, but was wisely silent.

A prepared spell was dropped on the floor at Kitty's feet and crushed beneath her boot. A cloud of red smoke rose up and engulfed the entire mass and swept them away.

Seconds later they were reappearing within the cavernous chamber of the demon Kitty had previously argued with.

She wasted no time and released all six frag rounds from her pistol directly between the glowing red eyes that were staring at them in confusion and fury.

"C'mon. That'll only stun him for a few moments." She barked over her shoulder as she headed for the throne within the shadows. One clawed hand was waving them in the direction they would need to go.

As all twenty Ular marched in the direction she indicated, she approached the shadowed throne and smacked her hand onto a glowing orb, opening the door to the chamber where the Balrog waited.

She started to turn to follow them, but paused as she looked at the demon that was now pulling bullet fragments from it's body. The now spent pistol was flipped around in her hand and she backhandedly whipped the weapon across the demon's head as hard as she could. The demon blinked in surprise, then slumped over. Black ichor dripped from his nose.

"That's for Marlenthal." She snarled and then flung the pistol aside as she ran after the Ular mercenaries.

The Ular she had sent flying not long after first meeting took up his designated spot at Kitty's side. Kitty wasn't entirely certain who designated it, but the Ular in question seemed to prefer to hover near her side when she was among the group of mercs. She never learned his name, but she had taken up calling him Tedaji. She'd just never tell him it was the moredhel word for a sweet-cake much like the human's cupcakes.

Gunfire was already echoing in the chamber as Kitty and Tedaji joined the rest. The balrog guarding the door to where Kitty needed to be was roaring. Humongous hands were grabbing Ular and flinging them across the chamber, often getting a knife or Torsion sword in it's arm for it's troubles. Apparently it had gotten it's missing hand regrown as well.

Fire burst from each wound created by the greater weapons. The assault rifles weren't doing much beyond annoying the beast, but some of the Ular had refused to exchange their weapons in favor of something larger.

Kitty went down on one knee as she pulled around her Plasma Cannon. She only got off one shot before the overheat warning indicator went off.

"Dammit!" She dropped the weapon to the ground in frustration.

That one shot was really all she needed. It hit the balrog in the neck, sending the beast toppling over. This gave the Ular the respite they needed, and the chance to finally get the balrog down for good.

Meanwhile, back in the throne chamber, the demon opened his eyes. One talon tipped hand shakily reached over to rub the orb, making it glow brightly before it faded. As it faded, the demon's hand fell away, lifeless.

In the chamber where the Ular were finishing off the balrog, Kitty was starting to walk for the door. She hadn't even gotten halfway there when the whole chamber began to shake. Her eyes went wide as she turned to see what was going on.

One of the great stone walls began to crumble and fall away. On the other side"

Two more balrogs were now making their way into the chamber.

"Oh hells.? She uttered.

Kitty would let the Ular handle them. Her main concern was getting to that door.

She backtracked to grab her plasma cannon, tossed it onto her shoulder, and took off running for that door. The deafening roars of the balrogs mixed with the screams of Ular as they met their final end was enough to make her sick. But she needed to focus on the task at hand.

Kitty reached the door and flung it open. She took two steps into the room, but was stopped there by the sudden sharp pain in her side. Her eyes dropped to see a large horn protruding from her body. Attached to said horn was some sort of hellhound type beast. It was snarling and roaring as Kitty grabbed it by its horns.

The last sound it made was a yelp of surprise as she pushed it away so the horn was no longer in her side. She followed this up with a quick jerking motion. The beast's spine made a sickening crunch sound and it fell limp. A long blade extended from her right bracer as she lifted the hellhound's head by its horn with her left. A quick downward swipe of her arm severed the beast's head from its body. She threw the head to the side as the blade disappeared back into her bracer.

"Give me your med pack." Kitty growled over her shoulder to Tedaji. The young Ular spoke not a word as he pulled it from his belt and handed it over without hesitation.

The armour she was wearing had stopped the horn from completely running her through. However, she still had a gaping hole in her side and it was bleeding profusely.

Kitty threw the pack open and pulled out one of the healing potions as Tedaji stood guard over her. The potion lacked instructions. Should she drink it' Pour it directly on the wound" She didn't have time for this! She decided to drink half and pour the rest into her wound.

"Mother Vith!" Kitty hissed through her teeth from the pain. Her eyes closed and the muscles along her jaw flexed as she gritted her teeth.

Her clawed hand flopped into the med bag again to pull out a spray canister, and some gauze. She started to push the gauze into the wound, only to stop with another hiss of pain.

"Here. Let me do it." Tedaji rumbled as he closed the door to block out the terrible noises. He then knelt next to her and reached for the gauze and canister.

Kitty let him take the items without protest. Her eyes traveled over the room they were in as Tedaji pressed the gauze into her wound and then covered it with the spray-on bandage.

The room was where the head demon apparently kept his most valued treasures. Except there were no gold or jewels here. There were rows upon rows of shelves. Each shelf had about six pyramids resting on it. Each pyramid was about the size of a baseball, looked to be constructed of a blue glass-like substance, and glowed faintly.

Once Tedaji finished patching her up, he helped Kitty get to her feet. She stumbled to the shelves and picked up a pyramid.

Suddenly Kitty's mind was filled with flashes of memories that were not her own. Smiling faces she did not know.

She gasped and thunked the pyramid back onto the shelf quickly.

"Are you alright, boss?" Tedaji inquired.

"What' Yeah. Just....yeah." Kitty nodded and then started to walk down the rows. Her clawed hand reached out and began to brush over the top of each pyramid. Each one would give her the same brief flash of memories.

She didn't have to go far. A couple shelves in she brushed her finger over a pyramid, only to see the crying face of a very young Chryrie. She stopped and lingered on that one a moment.

Yes. It was her brother.

Kitty snatched up the pyramid and shoved it into the specially made pouch she had purchased. The pouch looked still empty after she crammed the pyramid into it. She shoved the pouch into her pants pocket as she turned around.

"Let's get the hell out of here." Kitty started back for the door as quickly as her injured body would let her.

"You cannot fight these beasts with such a wound." Tedaji voiced his thought calmly.

"Yep. You're right."

Kitty agreed as she paused by the door. She pulled the plasma cannon from her back and started to fiddle with the controls.

"That's why, after I throw this thing, I want you to grab me and haul ass for the exit. Understand?" She looked at him over the side of the cannon.

"Yes boss." Tedaji nodded. There was the faintest flicker of worry in his eyes, but he didn't dare say a word.

Kitty threw open the door and stepped out. Tedaji was about to follow, but all he saw was a giant hand sweep down and scoop up Kitty. He had no time to even try and react.

Kitty, meanwhile, was less than happy at being scooped up by a giant, raging, fire demon. The balrog didn't even pause as it pulled back its arm to throw the moredhel across the cavernous chamber.

Kitty waited until the beast let her go. The cannon had cooled down just enough to let her get one more shot. The bolt of plasma hit the balrog in the face, sending it toppling over.

She didn't see that last part. She had no more than fired the shot and she hit the rock wall at full force then bounced off to impact the ground face first. She cried out from the pain as it agitated the already grievous wound in her side.

"Are you alright?" One of the Ular was suddenly at Kitty's side.

"Call for retreat. I have what I came for." She groaned out. The cannon was pulled into her lap as she sat up, clawed fingers working the controls. "Understood." The Ular merc nodded once, then ran off. Seconds later she could hear the retreat orders being bellowed out. Including Tedaji, there was only about ten of the Ular left alive. Those who remained looked to be nearly out of ammo. She felt a pang of guilt, but these men knew the risks going in.

As Kitty was pulling herself to her feet, Tedaji was jogging up next to her. "You are ready?" He asked while giving the plasma cannon a wary look.

"Yep." She looked toward the remaining balrog. It looked to be nearly done, but she wanted to make sure. Besides, she was due to buy a new plasma cannon. Something with a better cooling system.

Kitty hit a button on the plasma cannon and then threw it at the last balrog. The second the weapon left her clawed fingers, Tedaji grabbed her up and ran for the exit as fast as he could.

Each bounce made her want to cry out in pain but she bit her lip to hold it in.

While Tedaji was doing the running, Kitty was pulling a green bead from her pocket.

"That's everyone. Go! Go! Go!" She heard the Commander bellow. The bead was smashed between her thumb and forefinger. Within seconds Kitty and the remaining Ular disappeared in a cloud of green smoke.

Seconds later, the overloaded plasma cannon exploded, vaporizing everything within a quarter mile radius.
