PART ONE: A Request Over Coffee

Juliet was lost in her work, as usual. Her hands worked their way around an elaborate contraption of tubes and parts. Fasteners clicked, screws turned, and a hammer sounded its forceful tone across the room. "Hah!" she exclaimed, standing. "This should..." she trailed off as she pressed a button. Several devices whirred quietly to life. A hissing sound escaped from some part of the device, accompanied by what sounded like....percolation. A light brown liquid snaked its way through a tube and into another machine. A short time later, the liquid drained out a nozzle and into a beaker. Juliet took the beaker as soon as it was filled and drank from it excitedly. Her excitement turned to panic as she spat the liquid back into the beaker. "Damn! Still too hot!" She went back to making adjustments. Unknown to her, Karen Reilly had been standing behind her for some time. Yes, that Karen Reilly, CEO of Reilly Industries.

Karen made a slight coughing noise to attract Juliet's attention. Juliet jumped and shrieked at the sudden sound behind her. She turned to see who it was, and her face went white. "Ms-Ms. Reilly! I'm sorry, I-I-I didn't know you were coming down here today." She fought to regain her composure. "How can I help you?"

Karen was still examining the brown liquid that Juliet had drank. She picked up the beaker and sniffed it. She was used to coming in and just looking around every once in awhile. It was all her stuff anyway since it was created through her funding. She gave her staff free reign in their designs and inspirations because she always found the best people in their fields and trusted that they would be able to think ahead and design things that even she wouldn't be considering yet. She typically gave them general guidelines for things her various companies would need, but this time she needed something a little more specific, and a little more" specialized. She placed the beaker down and said with a raised eyebrow, "Isn't there a better way to make a cup of coffee??

Juliet was visibly embarrassed. "Well, you see, I was taking a coffee break, and I love espresso....I love it! But it's so hot....if I wait until it cools down, my break will be over. So I set my cup down and started to work on this..." She gestured toward her contraption, her anxiety fading. "I'm trying to make an appliance that will attach right to your espresso maker. Once it's brewed, it will enter into this machine which is supposed to flash-cool it..." She crossed one arm and held a hand to her chin. "The tricky part is making it work on a standard 120v outlet." Her eyes narrowed. "Maybe I can trap the heat to supplement its power..." She started walking to the workbench to rummage through her parts. "Oh! Don't worry. I've still got 5 minutes of break time left. I'd never do a side project like this on company time. The parts are mine, too." She smiled. "I collect all sorts of spare parts. You never know what might need fixing, or improving, or fixing after improving, or..." She was beginning to ramble.

Karen's other eyebrow raised as she smiled, trying not to laugh. She relaxed her face and said, "No need to worry. Finish your espresso machine after your next project. I'd love to incorporate it in all my companies. Any way to increase morale and save employee time is only good business sense. But, before you do that, I'd like you to start on a project for me right away."

Juliet turned sharply toward Karen at the request. Too sharply; the loud clack of her heels filled the room when she lost her balance a little. "Oh! Yes! Of course!" She rummaged through her pockets as she said, "What is it that you need?" She continued to fumble through her lab coat. The notepad was easy to find, but the pen eluded her...."I'd be happy to help you with anything!" she said as she turned back to her workbench and began to rummage through it. "I just....do you have a pen" I know I put one down here somewhere..." She dug through piles of parts and papers, searching for something to write with. "A pencil" Marker" Lipstick" There has to be something around here..."

Karen hushed a laugh as Juliet turned around looking for a pen, allowing Karen to view the pen holding up the bun in her hair. She gently pulled the pen from her bun, letting her hair fall. She held up the pen and said, "Would this one work?"

Juliet's eyes widened with joy. "Oh! Yes, thank you!" She took the pen eagerly. "I'll be sure to get this back to you later today, after I send a tech to get more pens..." She prepared to write. "Now, what will you be needing?"

Karen sighed and looked more serious as she said, "Well, this project is for me....Well, a new thing I'm trying, a new venture, anyway." She realized she was beginning to ramble as well, and quickly returned to her professional demeanor. "I need something that can immobilize large....animals....without harming them." It wasn't exactly a lie.

Juliet nodded, scribbling down notes. "Mhm....Can you be more specific" How big of an animal" Are you looking for a trap or something that can be used without much preparation' I guess if you want to trap animals without harming them, it shouldn't leave any lasting traces in the environment, right' Is this going to be something used by a team of people or something one person can operate?" She looked at Karen attentively, ready to write.

Karen hadn't even considered all those options, but that's why she employed the best. She answered, "Um, I'd like it to be able to trap something pretty big, maybe, you know, bigger than a human....Yes, it should be something able to be used very quickly and should be compact as possible. Something biodegradable would be perfect; you know how I like to keep green companies. I'd also like it to be something that could be used by one person."

Juliet nodded, the occasional "Mhm..." escaping her lips as she took notes. "Ok, I think I can come up with something. When do you need this done?" Juliet could barely contain her excitement; the CEO! Here! Asking for HER expertise in a special project! It was a shame her espresso cooler was not yet finished, but so what? Mouth burns only last a couple days. The favor of the boss would be well worth it!

"As soon as possible. And when you complete it, call my personal number." She handed her a business card with her private number written on the back in her handwriting. "Please remember, this is for me. I don't want records of this on file here....because, well, you know, it's not really music related..." Still not a lie.

"Oh, of course!" Juliet made a zipping motion across her lips. "This will be my personal project. I'll just tell the guys I'm trying out a new theory on cold fusion or something. I don't know why but they always give me space when I'm doing something like that." To Juliet, the fire extinguishers every five feet were just there to add color to the research department. "Give me a couple days and I'll see what I can come up with."

Karen nodded and smiled. She turned and continued making her rounds. Juliet waited calmly until the door shut behind Karen, and then the room filled with the clicks of her high heels as she danced in excitement, if you could call it dancing. She then dashed to the supply room and began rifling through her personal stash of parts. As she rummaged fervently, her hair tumbled into her face over and over. Frustrated, she wound it into a bun and secured it with the pen Karen had given her.

PART TWO: Web of Lies

It was time. Juliet took the new prepaid phone out of its package and activated its minutes. She dialed Karen's personal number. "Ms. Reilly' I have the prototype of your project ready....Yes, I was up already. Why"....Oh, I'm so sorry, I had no idea! I assure you, I'll never call you before 5am again....Ok. I'll see you soon." She put the phone on her desk and looked over her workshop yet again, making sure everything was just right. The plush test dummy was hanging near the far end of the room. Her prototypes were laid out on a table near the middle of the room. She sipped her espresso and waited.

She had only gotten a few hours sleep and didn't quite have enough time to conceal her bruises on her arms as easily this morning, trying to rush and come in quickly to check out the new project she requested. She felt a bit self conscious and pulled her long sleeves down to cover the bruising on her forearms. She walked in with a bit of a limp, but as soon as she saw Juliet, she quickly returned to her normal gait.

"Oh!" Juliet stood sharply. "Ms. Reilly! Hi! Come in, come in!" she said, waving Karen into the room. "I've been working on this for a while. It was tricky but I think you'll like the result." Juliet was still wearing the same outfit she'd had on yesterday; it was apparent that she did not go home, and one might surmise she had not gone to sleep either since her prototype was already finished. Regardless, while her clothes were the same as yesterday, they were also just as clean. Juliet herself looked as though she'd showered, gotten dressed and come to work like any other day. She led Karen to the table in the middle of the room, which was unusually clutter-free. Three small orbs sat on small stands on the table. They almost looked like grenades...

Karen took note of the changes from the previous day, and the 'unchanged' elements as well. She looked at the orbs and said, "So what are they??

Juliet St. James

Juliet smiled enthusiastically. "Officially they're Constrictive Restraint, Non-Lethal grenades. I call them web grenades because, well, it's shorter. I just had to have a catalog-friendly name." She took one in her hand and continued. "You hold here, and here," she said, pointing to the releases. "The spoon falls off, you throw it, and it explodes on contact into a spinning mass of sticky fibers. They'll stick to lots of stuff, and each strand will support up to 500 pounds vertically. After a second or so, the fibers will contract. They'll pull the target toward whatever else they're stuck to' walls, floors, ceilings" and the ones that spun around the target will squeeze around them. Not so much that it'll hurt, but they definitely won't be able to move. Here, I'll show you."

Juliet moved a few meters down from the table, took the grenade in a proper grip, and the spoon fell. "You just squeeze, and throw..." She moved her arm back, preparing to throw, when she and Karen heard a sudden pop. "Oh, for—-" Juliet started as the grenade detonated in her hand, and she was covered in the web fibers. One second later, the fibers began to contract, wrapping haphazardly around her body. With her arms and legs pinned together, she could not stop the other fibers from pulling her off-balance and she fell to the floor. She turned red slightly. "Oh my goodness....I thought I'd disassembled all of the first run!" She struggled to free herself but to no avail. "The detonator was a little tricky to work out, but it does work. Those other two on the table should be fine. They're the new ones." She strained against her bonds several times as she spoke, her face getting redder and redder. "The fibers....dissolve on their own....after about an hour." Her back arched as she continued to try to break free. "At least....it felt like an hour." She paused her struggle for a moment. "My clock is on the table, so I couldn't see it before.? She then groaned, trying with all her might to move her arms and legs. Her face was fully flushed by now, showing the tremendous embarrassment of Karen seeing this little accident.

Karen grabbed a scissors from the mess of things on one of the worktables. She knelt down and began to cut on the threads that were holding Juliet to the floor. The strong fibers would barely fray and she instead found a bolt cutter. She began to cut through the fibers as she said, "It looks good to me. How many more of these can you make by the end of the day?" She paused a moment then corrected herself by adding, ?"by the end of the work day?"

Juliet thought for a moment. "I have enough material to make six more. Some of the compounds I used are a little uncommon. I used all the cash in my purse already....I hadn't planned on going out last night, so..." She looked around the room, getting her bearings, and said, "You know, bolt cutters might take a while. There's a cutting laser in that locker over there. Just use the low setting. This skirt cost a hundred bucks!"

Karen would normally call in a lab tech to cut her out, but the anonymity of the project was more important to her. She jumped up and found the bulky laser in the locker. She plugged it in and turned it to the lowest setting. She cautiously began to cut through the fibers, more careful of not cutting Juliet herself, than her clothing. After a few stressful minutes, she helped her up and said, "Just do the six today. Call me when you have them ready. I'll forward some funds to your account when I return to my office. After you complete the six, take the day off. Tomorrow you can start on the espresso machine. I've been looking forward to it."

Juliet stood awkwardly, still embarrassed. "Are you sure" I can have six done in two hours..." She looked at the clock. "It's not even ten yet....I could run to an ATM before I go buy more of what I need." She felt the need to offer more results to try to make up for this embarrassing accident....it was one thing to do something like that alone, but it would be a while before she got over looking so foolish in front of Karen.

"Oh, no. I'm quite satisfied with six for the day. Now I'll need more by the end of the week. I'll need" let's say about a dozen each week, at least for now. But, yes, after you are finished, take the day off. You can stay if you'd prefer. I'll pay you for the day either way. Consider it time to work on your other personal interests here in the lab. Use any equipment or materials we have here." She added as she began to walk out of the lab, "But remember, first thing tomorrow, I'll expect you to finish up that espresso machine."

"You've got it!" Juliet began working immediately. The espresso machine wouldn't take long to finish, and she had another project in mind...

PART THREE: Engineering a Rescue

Another night behind her, Juliet locked the door to her lab and headed for home. She had been delivering Karen's specially requested web grenades for several weeks now, as well as a few other items. Juliet didn't know what Karen personally wanted with a special communication device or advanced body armor, but she didn't want to ask. It was enough that she was doing what Karen asked for. She had also been keeping up with her regular work, of course. Karen had and pursued many avenues for providing equipment to the military, as well as police and rescue workers. Someone had to design that equipment, and to her delight it was Juliet more often than not.

She was deep in thought about that work, as usual, but she knew the building so well she didn't even need to pay attention. She smiled as she passed a janitor in the hallway. He smiled back, saying "Have a good evening." She stopped for a moment. She didn't recognize this janitor. It was always Paul working in this wing at night....She continued on her way. Maybe Paul called in sick. He didn't look much like a Jose but who was she to question a man's name" She resumed thinking about her research as she entered the elevator. She waved at the night guard as she passed the front desk and out the main entrance.

As she rounded the corner, the street became oddly deserted. She didn't notice though, still working away inside her head. The click of her heels filled the empty night as she walked to the subway. Her mind worked furiously, almost oblivious to the world around her. A shadow moved up ahead, but she didn't notice. "There has to be some way to make it lighter," she thought. "Maybe if I use...?

Her thoughts were cut short when she felt something wrap around her arms. She tried to shriek in surprise, but a hand clamped over her mouth before the sound could escape. Her eyes went wide, her panic increasing further when a man rushed in and grabbed her legs. She tried to scream and break free, but to no avail. The two men lifted her from the ground. She frantically looked around as much as she could, wishing that someone, anyone, could see what was happening to her. She twisted and writhed in desperation as the two men carried her into the alley.

Chimera

Chimera was out early that evening, just as the sun went down. She grew weary of a particular gang in the area and thought she should keep an eye out. She felt her new communication device vibrate and she ducked back further to hide herself on the rooftop she was perched upon for surveillance. She accepted the call from her secretary. "Hello." She couldn't believe it. "No, no. Don't call the police....they might harm her if we do. Don't worry. Tell me where and when they said to meet them." She added with a stern tone, "I'll take care of it."

The instructions were clear. Drop the money off in a trash bin out in the back alley behind a small mom-and-pop store down by the docks and, in the morning, the Head Engineer of Reilly Industries would be returned on time to clock in. Karen made sure that the money was dropped off early, because she knew Chimera would need to be there for the pickup.

Chimera watched from a rooftop, her feminine eyes clearly seeing in the dark to spot any movement below. The men were late. Not many had the professional standards she had, she joked to herself as she watched them grab the money and head off into their car. As they turned she quickly turned into a bat, gliding in the night air as she followed the car a few blocks away to a seemingly abandoned warehouse. She glided up to a high window, able to see the entire length of the warehouse. A group of five men were already waiting, sitting in unfolded lawn chairs sitting around a small black and white television set. The two men came in with the bag and the five jumped up to greet them. They took the bag, dumped out the cash on a nearby conveyer belt, and eagerly began counting.

Chimera quickly scanned the room and saw Juliet tied to a chair in the far end of the warehouse, behind storage lockers, assumed stolen cars chopped and in pieces, and loads of other skids of goods. Chimera quickly glided down to the rear of the warehouse. She turned into a small field mouse and found a small hole in the wall. She ran in and quickly navigated the monstrous mounds until she found Juliet. She hurriedly turned into her black leather clad human form, fit with black leather mask covering the upper half of her facial features. Chimera assessed the ropes securing Juliet to the chair, as well as the duct tape over her eyes and mouth. She said gruffly with a light canine growl to mask her voice, "I'm here to help you. I'm going to remove this tape. Do not make any loud sounds."She quickly ripped the tape off of her face, and then began to cut the ropes with her formed, large claws.

Juliet St. James

Date: 2012-05-27 18:54 EST
Juliet froze, more out of fear than obedience, as the tape was ripped from her eyes and mouth. She saw the leather-clad woman cutting at the ropes binding her. She'd heard the techs at the lab talking about some masked crimefighter running around the city but never really paid them any mind until now. "Please....what?s going on' Why did they do this?" she whispered, trying her best to keep a quiet and steady voice.

Chimera kept using her gruff voice when speaking, while finishing the cutting, "These guys just wanted to ransom you off. Apparently you're important to some company." She tried not to say more than she had to say.

Juliet stood, rubbing her wrists. "I think I heard them talking about the ransom money. Wouldn't they be letting me go then?" As she took several steps toward the table to retrieve her purse, the door flew open. A man entered, pistol in hand, trained on the chair that was supposed to hold Juliet. "What the—" he exclaimed before he spotted Juliet and the mystery woman. "Someone's here! She's out!"

Juliet froze, watching the pistol move with surreal speed as it lined up on her, then fired. A faint shimmering field appeared around the points of impact as the bullets fell to the floor. The shimmering snapped her out of it, and she grabbed her hairpiece, squeezed it, and threw. It struck the gunman roughly in his chest; hardly precise, but good enough. The web fibers exploded and twirled before snapping back and immobilizing him. She moved as quickly as she could to her purse. She opened it and began to rummage through it, but her shaking hands let it fall to the floor. Its contents scattered, she knelt down and grabbed what looked like a flashlight. Another gunman stepped over his cohort and took several shots at Juliet.

The field shimmered as the bullets fell to the floor. Juliet turned to the thug, twisted the flashlight's end and flipped the switch. A blast of energy sent him sailing out the door and into another thug. It would be a moment before they stood again to pursue her, but that was not immediately on her mind. Her primary concern was her laser cutter; she had added that feature as a way to ward off one or perhaps two muggers. She did not believe its power cell would outlast what was surely more men than that. In her excitement, she did not notice where the masked woman had gone...

Chimera

Date: 2012-05-27 18:57 EST
Chimera immediately charged at two of the men that were running up to them, rushing them with a cheetah's speed. She jumped kicked the men in the chest, stinging them with a venomous spur that extended mid-flight from the back of her heel. The men were knocked back in excruciating pain, and fell to the floor, screaming and crying out.

Using her bat-like hearing, Chimera heard a man come up from behind her and she quickly released hard spines from her back, piercing the durable suit she was wearing from the pinpoint force from the spines. A few dozen small rips in the material were evident on her back. She would have to rethink her suit request in the morning. She turned around and saw she had not only hit the man behind her, but a man slightly further back who was also rushing up behind her. Both were now on the ground nursing wounds with six inch quills sticking out of their chest and abdomen. She quickly threw two web grenades on them, immobilizing them.

Juliet peered through the doorway and witnessed the spectacle. She watched the two men fly back from the woman's intense kicks, but something else caught her eye as well....a familiar shimmering along the side of her body. She was not at all prepared for the quills exploding from the woman's back, and she gasped audibly. Her focus then locked onto the web grenades that exploded on the two men....Suddenly, one of the thugs she'd knocked down charged at her firing wildly. Only a couple shots hit their mark, but it was enough; the inside of the field changed color, and she knew it was close to collapse. She fired her laser cutter at him, knocking him away. The other thug charged her as well. She fired on him, but her face filled with shock as the bolt was obviously much smaller; the power cell was dead. The bolt struck the charging thug, knocking his gun from him but leaving him standing and still coming right at her. She stumbled backward, trying to get behind the wall, but fighting in heels was just not something she'd ever practiced. Her heel came down on a tube of lipstick from her purse.

Juliet fell backward, her head striking the floor and dazing her momentarily. Before she could get her bearings, the thug was on her, grabbing at her blouse. She feebly raised an arm to defend herself but it was too slow and too late. She saw the thug's fist getting closer, and closer, and closer....and then she saw nothing.

PART FOUR: Confronting the Beast

Juliet woke up on her couch, her face still sore. She didn't know how she got there, but the thought did not hold for long. Her mind flooded with the events of the last two days....the kidnapping, the fear, the fighting....the heroine using HER technology....She stepped absently into the shower, deep in thought and able to do little more than stand in the streams of water. She put on a blue blouse and black skirt. She might have looked excellent, but it was more an accident fueled by habit. She sat in her bathroom, and a small robot applied her typical understated makeup. She did not notice, but rather stared into the mirror, still deep in thought. She slid into a pair of black heels and walked to the subway. It would have left without her, if not for the kindness of a fellow rider. She sat and stared at the floor, the vibrant images of last night still playing in her mind.

As she entered the lobby at Reilly Recording, the echoing clicks of her heels were like a metronome, keeping the memories steadily flowing through her. She entered the elevator and began to select S3, her lab, when her hand stopped. She stared at the keypad for a moment, and her hand found its way to the top. It was time for an impromptu meeting....As the elevator glided upward, she tried to gather her resolve. As the elevator slowed, she took a deep breath. She exited the elevator, trembling slightly as she walked toward Karen's doors and ignoring the secretary addressing her. She closed the doors behind her, turned and walked slowly toward Karen. "It's you," she said, holding her hands together gingerly below her chest. "You're the masked woman....the one who saved me."

Chimera

Date: 2012-05-28 23:51 EST
Karen saw someone come out from the elevator, which piqued her interest since she knew she didn't have any meetings scheduled for that time. When Juliet walked passed the secretary, the secretary jumped up and looked to Karen to determine if she should call security. Karen smiled, put down her cup of espresso, and waved her hand lightly to indicate everything was fine. She looked at Juliet oddly as she closed the door and Karen's jaw dropped slightly with her declaration. She blinked hard and tried to focus her racing thoughts. Did she say something to give herself away before Juliet was knocked unconscious" Did she leave something behind in Juliet's apartment when she carried her home after apprehending all of the men" Never wanting to say more than she had to say, she asked softly, "What ever do you mean?"

"The web grenades," Juliet replied nervously. "I saw the web grenades....I only make those for you. Nobody else even knows I do it."

Karen hated to lie. She regretted that professional standard she had made for herself. She said, "Even you are aware that many of the technological projects that are developed for Reilly Industries are often sold to other corporations or governments."

Juliet was still nervous, but she was calming herself a little. "The shield....it had to be calibrated to the user's height and weight to be able to cover them properly. I didn't show anyone else how to do that..."

Karen knew that her excuses were slowly fading. She said hesitantly, "Well, other corporations have head engineers who could examine the technology and could easily figure out how to operate the device?"

Juliet St. James

Date: 2012-05-28 23:53 EST
Juliet took a breath to steady herself. Still trembling just a little, she said, "The suit....I only had time to make one. I made it to the specific measurements you gave me..." She raised her arm and pressed a few buttons on the keypad on her arm. An invisible light bathed Karen's upper body over her desk. Juliet looked at the display on her arm, then slowly looked at Karen. "....your measurements."

Karen sighed. She knew she couldn't evade the accusations. She leaned back in her chair in defeat and said bluntly, "Tell me. If I was some masked vigilante in the night' If I asked you for technology to help me apprehend criminals" If I was willing to put my life on the line to protect this city' Would I still have your support and your talents as my Lead Engineer?" She would tell her all she needed to, but she would not come out and admit to anything that could jeopardize her business and her employees.

Juliet blinked. For what seemed like an eternity to her, the memories of the previous nights flashed in her mind. The fighting, the gunshots....the kidnapping....the fear. She took a breath, pausing for a moment. Finally, she raised her arm in front of her, her other hand on her keypad. "Tell me what you need.?
