...A shadow fell across the page she'd been reading. So much for a nice quiet day reading at the beach. She let the book drift shut with her hand minding her place and cast a scathing glare at the man blocking out the sun.
Austin Jones, the bane of January's existence, was one tall drink of water. Lightly muscled, shirtless to show off his delectable physique, dark haired and those green eyes! Bad girl, stop thinking that! She shook her head to clear the cobwebs and...
Auric winced at the loose-bound manuscript in his hands and flipped through to another section.
...She grabbed hold of his throbbing...
"Seren!" He tossed the pages down and scrubbed a hand over his eyes as if that would erase the memory of the passage he'd just seen far too much of. "You told me this one didn't have any of that!"
Seren was lounging on the opposite end of the couch going through her own copy, marking down typos and making notes on things she wanted to edit.
"Oh stop being a big baby," she told her brother with a roll of her eyes. "It's a romance novel! Of course there is going to be sexy stuff in there." She focused on the page again and jotted down a notation in the margin. "Besides, there's only like four or five racy scenes in this one."
Auric looked from the manuscript to his sister and back again. "It's a short book! How can you pack that much sex into that few pages"!" He held up a hand before she could answer. "Never mind....never mind. I don't want to know. What I do know is you went out the other night. Were you careful?"
"I think you should get yourself a girlfriend," she replied lightly. But her eyes had become fixed on one spot on the page.
"I don't need a girlfriend, Seren, and don't change the subject."
She sighed and looked up from her newest book. "You absolutely need a girlfriend. You would be much more tolerable if you got laid." When Auric just stared back at her with an unwavering gaze she sighed and set the manuscript aside. "Yes, I went out. And yes, I was careful! I don't need you watching over my shoulder all the time."
"You have to be careful here, Seren. There are a lot of dangerous beings."
"I know there are, Auric", she wrinkled her nose at him. "I can handle myself. I can heal. You're the one who needs to be careful, what with this....business you've gotten yourself into." She narrowed her eyes at him. "You don't even know them."
"You don't know them either. It's just work." Auric crossed his arms over his chest and stared back at his sister.
"Oh' Just work? Well I think this guy you're protecting is a scum bag. I think he's doing some shady stuff and I think you shouldn't be involved." She emulated her brother's pose. When he didn't say anything after a minute she let out a sigh and deflated. "I'm worried, Aur..."
He reached over to pull Seren into a hug. He didn't relent his squeezing until she sighed again and eased into his embrace. "I'm being careful, Seren. I can't just sit around and do nothing. I need to be doing something."
"I know," she replied petulantly. "I just wish that something was a little safer."
He laughed. "Well, this Rhydin place doesn't seem to have much 'safe' to it." He pressed a kiss to the top of her head and let her go. He stretched as he got up from the couch. "Go back to your smut. I have to get to work."
"Be careful."
"Clean your damn apartment sometime, yeah," he glanced around the place he said on his way to the door. "You'll never get a man living like this." He narrowly escaped out the door before the shoe Seren hurled reached where he'd been standing moments before.
With her brother gone Seren slumped into the corner of the couch left warm by her twin's time there, her eyes staring off into the distance. It'd only been a short few months since they'd left their home only a few steps ahead of men who'd wanted them dead. And old grudge, Auric had said, men their father had wronged seeking revenge on his children. Well, their father had been a terrible man. But she suspected there was more to this than her brother let on. She didn't think his paranoia over her going out was just brotherly concern. He said they'd be safe here. He said they couldn't follow.
She wasn't so sure.
One last sigh and she picked up her manuscript to lose herself in work once more.
