"Rachael was standing there watching the dead people guy prod at the body and then I saw that dude stick the dead guy with one of those doohickies like Maria does the turkey at Thanksgiving!" Aja was relating her recent sighting of her new Watch friend to Mami and Anya at lunchtime, as she often did, looking very amused while relating the story to them.
"Aja Bird. Such stories don't belong at the dinner table." Mami scolded.
"Good thing we're at a cafe table then." Aja grinned just before she would hide and quickly, knowing Mami to often swat her for being over exuberant.
"If you two don't behave, I'll pull this table over, I swear." Anya said semi sternly as she tried to hide the grin at Aja's antics. Aja giggled as she retook her seat.
"I'm surrounded by people who poke at bodies. Did you know that?" Aja grinned undaunted by Mami's glare. "Parker pokes at people, Anya pokes at people...Rachael watches a guy who pokes at people." she sighed dramatically. "I'm the only one who doesn't poke at people."
"Except with swords." Anya reminded her.
"Oooh yer right. I *do* poke at people!" Aja laughed. "There's an abundance of poking going on in RhyDin."
"Dirty." Anya chuckled at Aja who nearly spit out the coffee she had just taken a drink of.
"And that's not appropriate conversation either, young lady." Mami scolded Anya now making Aja practically fall out of her chair giggling.
"Da, Mami." Anya looked properly chastised, although mischief sparkled in her hazels anyway.
Once Aja caught her breath she gave Anya a wink before saying.
"So, apparently, someone at the yards has decided that it's a whole lot of fun to prank the crew. Another sheepie arrived at the office for Rikki."
"Someone sent my Rico a sheep?" Mami asked curiously. "Why would they do that?" Mami's question sent both Anya and Aja into a fit of giggles. "What did I say that was so funny?" she asked of the girls confused by what had the ladies giggling so hard.
Anya was not about to enlighten Mami on the subject. She would let Aja tackle that one.
"Hopefully they sent the extras." Aja said between giggles then gave the still puzzled looking Mami an innocent smile. "It's a joke thing, Mami. Don't worry about it." Aja waved a hand. "It does make me wonder what sort of prank I can pull on Ajia." Aja leaned on her arm with the thoughtful expression then suddenly grinned. "Maybe I can put hydraulics in her shoes!" Aja sat up with a wicked grin. "Push a button and I can make her go up and down like those cars with bobble head puppies!"
"And the purpose of doing that would be?" Mami asked looking at Aja confused.
"It would be really funny?" Aja grinned at Mami and batted her eyes.
"Not to mention dangerous." Mami's mother hen voice was in full effect. "You could cause her to trip and she could break her neck."
"Noooo." Aja waved her hand. "I would do it when she was walking along by the docks, and maybe make her fall into the water."
Mami regally shook her head. There were a lot of times that Aja's sense of humor made absolutely no sense to her, now was one of those times.
Mami knew that she would never fully understand Aja, no matter how many years she lived and that pressing for answers from her adopted daughter rarely ever got them. If anything, they made her close ranks even tighter than before. Mami had come to the realization that pushing Aja for anything would rarely be successful.
"I was hoping Rico would join us for lunch one of these Wednesday's, Aja. Do you think you could arrange that?"
"I don't see why not." Aja said glancing over at Anya curious if her sister knew what this sudden turn of conversation was about. Anya covertly shrugged in response as she ate her lunch listening to the conversation. "I mean, we're busy. But not like we were before." With Mami, you never let her pin down a date, because it usually meant she was planning something.
"That would be lovely." Mami smiled warmly and Aja nodded still warily looking at Mami.
"You could always ask him when you see him on Sunday mornings fer brunch, Mami." Aja suggested before taking a bite of her chicken.
"This is correct." Mami agreed slowly and Aja knew the reason she hadn't so far was going to follow in a moment. "Rico's been inviting Ajia to brunch lately and I do not wish to speak of future lunch dates with my son and be rude not to extend the invitation to his guest."
"Ah." Aja grinned and looked over at Anya who was also smiling now. "Now I get it." she set her fork down and leaned back in her chair smiling at Mami. "You want to speak to him without my sister there to see when he might be considering things like weddings and babies." Aja laughed and shook her head. "Sneaky. Very, very sneaky."
