Adam had taken charge after Rhys and company had disappeared into the mist that took them to Avalon. It was a simple enough matter to explain what had happened to the local police. Adam had very little trouble covering up the truth and convincing them that it had all been due to organized crime and not a coven of witches. In his experience, he'd found that law officials would rather believe a lie than believe that the things that haunted their nightmares were real. Once he'd tied up loose ends in Iowa and made sure the Bristol house was nothing more than rubble, he took to the road behind the wheel of Rhys' rebuilt Chevelle. Though he was anxious to get home to Gina and Joey, there was one short stop he had to make on the way. He had made a promise, and he intended to keep it. Three days later, he was home at last and hoping to stay put for a while.
The first order of business upon arriving home was arranging for a little surprise, but in order to put his plan into motion, he had to enlist Joey's help. The boy was more than willing to help with Adam's little surprise, and between them, they arranged it all without Gina suspecting a thing. That night, Joey arranged to sleep over at a friend's house, claiming they needed to work on a project for school, and Adam went to work.
Ironically, while Adam was "working" on his little surprise, Gina was working. Her current internship kept throwing up unexpected workloads, and though she was a competent worker, there were times when she really resented the way the so-called working professionals at this particular law firm had a tendency to look down their noses at her just for being a single mother. The extra thrown at her today had left her rushed and out of time, and she'd already called Joey and Adam separately to warn them she would be later home than she had expected. Thus when she let herself in through the front door, she wasn't exactly a happy bunny. "I know, I know, I'm hideously late, I couldn't get away."
The first thing that she noticed when she stepped into the house was that it smelled divinely like her favorite meal in all the world. The house had obviously been picked up. There were no shoes or dirty clothes or school books lying around. The laundry had been washed, dried, and put away. Everything was for once in its place. There was a bouquet of pink roses in a crystal vase on the table, along with several candles which gave off a softly scented aroma. The table had been set with her finest dinnerware, and a bottle of wine sat chilling in a bucket of ice. There was no Joey anywhere, no shout of, "Hi, Mom!" Soft music played on the stereo, the kind you danced or made love to.
Never let it be said that Gina Gianelli was not observant. Of course, the first thing she really noticed was the lack of Joey, but given that she had spoken to him on the phone less than ten minutes ago as she stepped out of the subway, she wasn't too worried about that. Leaving her bag under the table by the door, she followed her nose, a faint smile curving her lips as she let herself be seduced by the atmosphere in the house. Someone had gone to a lot of trouble tonight. Three guesses who.
Well, it sure as heck wasn't Rhys and it wasn't Joey either, so that narrowed the list down somewhat. There was someone else in the house with her, in the kitchen, humming along with the music which, for the moment, happened to be Frank Sinatra. Adam had on a tailored gray suit over a white shirt, the kind of suit he might wear to the office or out to dinner, unlike the usual sweater and jeans. He was moving around in the kitchen as he tended to the meal, stirring the veggies and checking on the potatoes. Everything had to be just right. He smiled when he heard the door, and plucked a rose from the vase with which to greet her.
Gina couldn't resist poking her nose into the living room to take a look around before making her way along the hall to the kitchen. Though not a particular messy family, they had a tendency to forget to tidy up after themselves, usually through being rushed. It was almost luxurious to be able to walk down the hallway without having to dodge shoes and bags. Unbuttoning the jacket of her dress suit as she stepped through the door, she paused, her faint smile deepening as she laid her eyes on Adam. "I feel under-dressed."
"More like over-dressed," he remarked as he looked her over from head to toe, a smile of approval on his face. He handed her the rose and leaned in to brush a soft kiss against her lips. "Welcome home," he told her, though he was the one who had been gone for over a week. "Dinner is almost ready. Do you want to get into something comfortable before we eat?"
She leaned into him as he kissed her, curling her fingers about the stem of the rose. Romance really hadn't been a factor in her life until Adam had come onto the scene, and even then, between their jobs and a hyperactive small boy, there hadn't been much time for romance. "You did all this for me?" she asked softly, feeling strangely shy in the face of so much preparation. "At least now I know why Joey left home for the night."
"No, I did it for Rhys, but he's not here, so you'll have to do," he teased, a small smirk on his lips. "I was gonna take you out, but I thought you might like this better. I hope you don't mind."
She laughed, poking at his stomach through his suit jacket. "You're lucky I love you, or I might have taken that seriously," she threatened him playfully, the petals of the rose brushing his nose for a moment. "I do like this better. I can't believe how much effort you put into it." Her chuckle trailed off in disbelief, looking around one last time before raising her eyes to his. "I'll go change," she told him. "Put work completely away for the night."
He chuckled at her reply, letting her poke him through his jacket. "No argument there. I'm the luckiest guy in the world, and it's all because of you," he said as he touched a finger to her nose to emphasize his statement. "That's a good girl," he agreed with another kiss and a smile, plucking the rose from her so he could return it to the vase. He couldn't promise he wouldn't tell her what had happened in Iowa, if she asked, but he wanted tonight to be about them.
She might have been intensely curious to know what had happened, but she knew enough to keep her going for now - that Rhys had located and rescued his sister, and that they were all on Avalon for the time being. Despite that curiosity, she was more than happy to fall into the surprise Adam had prepared for her, answering his kiss with one of her own before she turned to slip out of the kitchen. Excited butterflies flickered in her stomach as she made her way upstairs, feeling a little like a teenager getting ready for her first date.
